U.S. forces struck Iranian targets on Qeshm Island on Monday after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired at an American aircraft, according to U.S. officials cited by CBS News.

Three U.S. officials described the operation to CBS as limited, defensive strikes near the Strait of Hormuz. A senior official identified Qeshm Island as the target and said the strikes followed the Iranian attack on the aircraft.

Iran International, citing an Axios report based on a U.S. official's account, said a U.S. fighter jet destroyed an Iranian surface-to-air missile launcher on the island in self-defense. The reports did not establish a full damage assessment.

Qeshm lies along the northern side of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for commercial shipping. Its location helps Iran monitor and exert control over traffic through the waterway.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tuesday that Tehran retained the right to self-defense following the strikes, according to CBS News.

The strikes came while U.S. and Qatari mediators continued efforts toward a possible agreement with Iran. The accounts of the operation were attributed to U.S. officials; further details remained limited.
