United Airlines is set to begin nonstop service between Newark Liberty International Airport and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix on Saturday, October 31, according to the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Governor Albert Bryan Jr. announced the launch Thursday as part of the territory's effort to expand air service and strengthen its connection with the Northeast United States. The route will link St. Croix directly with United's Newark hub.

The inaugural flight from Newark, United 1409, is scheduled to arrive at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport at 1:20 p.m. Saturday, the government said. United 1410 will operate the return trip to Newark.

Four pilots with St. Croix roots are scheduled to fly the inaugural services, according to the announcement. Capt. Shawn Lewis and First Officer Eugene Washington will fly from Newark to St. Croix, while Capt. Douglas Armstrong and First Officer Regine Acosta will operate the return flight.

Bryan said better access to St. Croix would support hotels, restaurants, attractions and small businesses. The government described the Newark connection as part of a broader effort to expand airline partnerships and bring more visitors to the territory.

The service had not yet begun when the announcement was issued. Travelers should check United's schedule for their intended dates, as flight times and operating plans can change.
