Treasury expects to borrow $618 billion in privately held net marketable debt from October through December, $10 billion less than it estimated in August. It said the cut comes mainly from a higher starting cash balance.

The U.S. Treasury Department said Monday it expects to borrow $618 billion in privately held net marketable debt in the October-December quarter, assuming an end-of-December cash balance of $850 billion.

That is $10 billion lower than the estimate Treasury announced in August. Treasury said the change is mainly because the cash balance at the start of the quarter was higher than it had assumed, partly offset by lower projected net cash flows. Excluding the higher starting cash balance, the current quarter's borrowing estimate is $24 billion higher than the August figure.

For January-March 2027, Treasury expects to borrow $800 billion in privately held net marketable debt, assuming an end-of-March cash balance of $1 trillion.

The figures cover privately held net marketable borrowing. They are not the federal deficit or the total national debt. Treasury said it will release more details on its quarterly refunding at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4.
