Toms River officials have introduced an ordinance that would prohibit data centers, server farms and cryptocurrency mining facilities throughout the township, according to The Lakewood Scoop.

The proposal would remove those facilities as permitted, accessory or conditional uses in every zoning district, planned development and redevelopment area. It has been introduced, not finally adopted.

The ordinance cites the large electricity and water demands of data centers and their cooling systems. Officials raise concerns about pressure on the electrical grid, possible costs for utility customers and effects on local water resources.

The proposed definition covers facilities used mainly to house and operate computer systems, servers, data storage and network equipment. It also includes supporting systems such as cooling equipment, backup generators and electrical substations.

If adopted, the measure would bar municipal approvals for the establishment or operation of the covered facilities, including zoning and construction permits, site-plan approvals and redevelopment agreements, The Lakewood Scoop reported.

The proposal comes as New Jersey communities debate how to handle growing demand for large computing facilities. Its practical effect in Toms River depends on final passage; the introduction alone does not put the ban into force.
