The U.S. Space Force formally activated its special operations component command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa on Monday, creating a dedicated connection between the service and U.S. Special Operations Command.

SPACEFOR-SOC is USSOCOM's first new service component since 2006. It joins the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations components.

The command is led by Col. Peter "Charlie" Norsky. It took administrative effect on October 7, ahead of the November 2 activation ceremony.

Headquartered at MacDill, the command organizes specialized personnel known as SOF Guardians for theater special operations commands and joint task forces around the world.

The Space Force said it will deploy small teams combining space, cyber and intelligence specialists to support operations in contested areas and places where communications are degraded.
