Six people were killed in a shooting near Krakow's Main Market Square on Saturday, according to Polish authorities. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said 16 people were being treated in hospitals, including the suspect and two police officers.

The hospital figure includes the attacker and should not be read as 16 additional victims. Polish outlet Wirtualna Polska reported that two other people had been examined and discharged.

Police said a man drove into the area near Slawkowska Street, just off the square, at about 3 p.m. local time and fired at people at random. Officers shot and detained the suspect, who was taken to a hospital.

Two officers were wounded during the response. Police said the suspect is a Polish citizen and denied reports that a second attacker was involved. Investigators are checking his contacts and movements to determine whether anyone else assisted him.

Kierwinski said preliminary findings suggested the gunman had been influenced by far-right ideology. That was an initial assessment, not a completed finding on motive. Authorities have not established in the sources reviewed that Jewish people or a Jewish site were targeted.

Police found additional weapons and ammunition in the vehicle, according to a police spokesperson cited by ABC News. Investigators are examining where the weapons came from.

Emergency services urged people to stay clear of the areas where police and rescue workers were operating. The investigation remained underway Saturday evening.
