On This Day: The ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ Rescue 16 Years Ago

Michael Duffy, a Circle Line captain, vividly recalls leading rescue efforts during the “Miracle on the Hudson” 16 years ago. On January 15, 2009, after US Airways Flight 1549 crash-landed in the Hudson River, Duffy swiftly evacuated his sightseeing boat to assist passengers, playing a critical role in saving lives.

Working with NY Waterway ferries and first responders, Duffy’s vessel became a triage hub for the 155 passengers and crew rescued from icy waters. “The harbor community came together that day,” Duffy said, praising the teamwork that turned potential tragedy into a story of hope and heroism.
