LAX Train Opening Delayed Again, Contractor Now Forecasts February

The train contractor's latest forecast points to February 5, 2027, but Los Angeles airport officials have not announced an opening date for the long-delayed system.

The long-delayed train system at Los Angeles International Airport faces another setback, with its contractor now forecasting a February 5, 2027 opening, according to reporting Thursday by the Los Angeles Times. That date is a contractor projection, not an opening date announced by airport officials.

The automated people mover, now branded LAX SkyLink, is intended to connect airport terminals with transportation facilities outside the central terminal area, including parking, rental cars and regional transit connections. Travelers cannot yet rely on the train for their airport trip.

The latest forecast comes after a series of schedule changes. Los Angeles World Airports has not confirmed when passenger service will begin, and the airport authority disputes the contractor's account of the reasons for the delay.

The disagreement means the contractor's February forecast should not be treated as a guaranteed launch. The project must complete the testing, readiness and other requirements needed before passengers can board.

Airport officials have published information addressing the project's status and their position on the remaining work. The train's opening is separate from the continuing operation of LAX terminals and the existing ground-transportation options available to travelers.

Passengers planning an upcoming flight should use the airport's current transportation guidance rather than assume SkyLink will be available. The airport authority's official project fact sheet provides its account of the schedule and outstanding issues.
