Lakewood Mayor to Ask Police Chief About Crossing Guard at Pine and Washington
Ray Coles says engineers are planning road expansion and traffic lights at the intersection. He also promised a safety review at 14th Street and Cedar Row.

Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles said he will ask the police chief whether a crossing guard can be assigned to Pine Street and Washington Avenue while engineers work on plans to expand the intersection and install traffic lights.
Coles made the comments in response to a resident's question published Tuesday by The Lakewood Scoop. The resident described backups during busy hours and asked whether a crossing guard or traffic officer could help drivers turn through the intersection until a signal is installed.
"Our engineers are working on a plan to expand and place lights at this intersection," Coles wrote. "I will ask the chief to see if there is a crossing guard he can assign there."
The response did not announce that a crossing guard had been assigned or give a date for the traffic-light work.
In a separate question, a resident raised concerns about visibility at 14th Street and Cedar Row, saying parked cars can make it difficult for southbound drivers on Cedar Row to see traffic while crossing 14th Street. The resident asked the township to consider a four-way stop, parking restrictions or another safety measure.
Coles said he would ask township professionals to look into the intersection and return with recommendations. No four-way stop or other change was announced.
