Judge Orders NYC to Give ICE Limited Records on Bronx Shelter Residents

A federal judge has ordered New York City to provide immigration authorities with records about certain residents of a Bronx homeless shelter, rejecting the city's challenge to an ICE subpoena.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled Friday that the Mamdani administration must comply with the request, which seeks names, birth dates and other identifying information about men living at the shelter on Bruckner Boulevard.

The request is not an unrestricted demand for every resident's information. Federal officials agreed to the use of a special master to narrow the list to residents accused of certain violent crimes or with serious criminal histories, according to reporting on the order.

ICE says the records are relevant to an investigation into people who may be in the country illegally and subject to deportation. The city has fought the subpoenas, arguing that earlier requests were overly broad and lacked a legitimate investigative purpose.

The New York Immigration Coalition urged City Hall to appeal, citing the city's sanctuary protections. The ruling follows several previous subpoena requests for information about residents of city shelters.
