Harmeet Dhillon is resigning as head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, saying her decision to leave was made weeks before the midterm elections.

Dhillon said in an interview that she had informed White House chief of staff Susie Wiles three weeks earlier that she wanted to return to private practice. According to Dhillon, Wiles asked her to wait until after the election.

"I wasn't asked to resign," Dhillon said. "I resigned three weeks ago, and Susie asked me to please wait until after the midterms."

Reports say Dhillon formally submitted her resignation on November 5. Attorney General Todd Blanche said he had accepted it and thanked her for her public service.

Dhillon was nominated by President Donald Trump in December 2024 and took office in April 2025 after Senate confirmation. Before joining the administration, she founded the Dhillon Law Group and the Center for American Liberty.
