Israel’s national carrier, El Al Israel Airlines, has announced the suspension of its route to Johannesburg, South Africa, effective the end of March. The decision comes amidst plummeting demand following accusations from South Africa of genocide against Israel at the World Court.
According to an El Al spokesperson, Israelis are increasingly hesitant to travel to South Africa, leading to numerous flight cancellations and significantly low passenger numbers. The airline plans to redirect resources previously allocated to the South Africa route to bolstering services to North America and Asian destinations like Bangkok and Tokyo.
The move by El Al follows escalating tensions between Israel and South Africa, with the latter accusing Israel of state-led genocide, particularly in the Gaza Strip. Despite Israeli government officials dismissing these accusations as baseless, the situation has impacted travel preferences and prompted El Al’s strategic route adjustment.
