Dutch Museum Backtracks on Canceling 300-Year Amersfoort Jewish Exhibit

A museum in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, has agreed to reconsider its cancellation of an exhibition marking 300 years of Jewish life in the city after protests from the Jewish community and intervention by Mayor Lucas Bolsius.

The municipality, museum and local Jewish community will work together to explore how the exhibition can be held. The change reopens the project, but the reports reviewed do not establish that a final exhibition plan has been approved.

The exhibition had been in preparation for about five years ahead of the synagogue's 300th anniversary in February 2027. The synagogue dates to 1727, and the community has planned events and a commemorative book to mark the anniversary.

Museum director Paul Baltus said tensions linked to the Middle East had changed the circumstances surrounding the exhibition. He expressed concern about the pressure on staff and volunteers at the small institution, while acknowledging there was no concrete information about a security threat against the event.

Jewish community representatives objected to the cancellation, saying Jewish life in the Netherlands should not be treated as an extension of the Israeli government's actions. The decision also drew concern from local political and religious leaders.

Following talks with museum officials and the community, Bolsius said the participants agreed that the city's Jewish cultural history deserved to be told. They will examine practical options for moving the exhibition forward.
