Less than two weeks after a devastating cargo vessel accident at Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, another maritime incident has occurred. On April 7, 2024, a massive container ship, the M/V APL Qingdao, lost propulsion power near New York City’s Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
The 89,000-ton vessel was navigating the Kill Van Kull waterway when it experienced the power failure, prompting a response from the US Coast Guard. Despite initial concerns, the vessel was brought under control with the assistance of multiple tugboats.
This incident echoes the recent tragedy in Baltimore, raising questions about maritime safety and the resilience of shipping infrastructure.
