Conduent to Lay Off 113 at Newark Office Running NJ's E-ZPass Customer Service Center After Tolling Business Sale

Conduent plans to lay off 113 employees at its Newark office as part of the planned sale of its tolling business, while keeping the facility that runs New Jersey's E-ZPass customer service center operating.

The state Labor Department's WARN archive lists January 21, 2027, as the effective date for the cuts at Conduent State & Local Solutions. The notice was filed in October.

Conduent announced an agreement in June to sell its tolling business to Quarterhill for $70 million in cash, plus a 7% interest in the Canadian company. The companies said the transaction was expected to close before the end of 2026, subject to closing conditions.

The company says the cuts involve certain roles that will not transfer with the business. Most Newark employees are not affected, and the facility will continue to operate. Eligible employees will receive separation benefits under applicable policies and requirements.

Conduent operates the New Jersey E-ZPass Consortium's customer service center under contract with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. The consortium handles electronic toll collection, customer service and collections for seven toll agencies across the state.

The planned sale and layoffs are separate from Conduent's challenge to the award of an 11-year E-ZPass customer service contract to a rival company. The workforce notice does not mean the Newark center is shutting down.
