Bodum is recalling approximately 5.9 million French press coffee makers in the United States after reports that glass carafes broke during use, including incidents that burned consumers.
The recall, announced Thursday with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, covers 8-cup and 12-cup French presses with replaceable glass carafes. The affected models are Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya.
Bodum has identified 70 reports of carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns. According to the CPSC, damaged or cracked glass can break unexpectedly. Stirring with a metal spoon or utensil can damage the carafe and contribute to that risk.
Consumers should immediately stop using metal spoons or other metal utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafe. They should not use a carafe that is cracked or damaged.
The remedy is a free plastic Bodum stirring spoon and an additional warning label. It is not a blanket refund or replacement of every coffee maker. Consumers should contact Bodum to request the recall materials and check whether their model is covered.
The recalled products were sold from 1974 through October 2026 for about $15 to $65 at Target, Walmart, coffee and home-goods stores and online retailers. The Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most models, and is engraved with product warnings on the glass carafe.
Bodum says the recall is intended to reinforce safe-use instructions. The company says future affected products will be sold with the plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label.
Consumers can call Bodum at 888-879-8213 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday. Model-identifying information and recall instructions are available in the CPSC recall notice and through Bodum's recall website.
