Waymo to Launch Robotaxi Service in Miami by 2026

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company owned by Alphabet, has announced plans to expand its operations to Miami, marking another step in its rapid U.S. growth. Testing of its all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles with human safety drivers is set to begin in 2025, with paid rides through the Waymo One app slated to launch in 2026.

This expansion highlights Waymo’s growing confidence in its self-driving technology, particularly in navigating challenging weather conditions such as the wet and rainy environment of Miami. The company previously tested in Miami in 2019 to enhance its system’s capabilities in adverse weather.

Waymo has been scaling its services across major cities, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco, where it recently lifted a waitlist for 300,000 users. With more than 150,000 paid rides weekly, Waymo remains the only autonomous vehicle developer offering commercial robotaxi services in multiple U.S. metropolitan areas.

The company’s growth has been fueled by a $5.6 billion funding round and strategic partnerships, including a collaboration with mobility company Moove to manage fleet operations in Miami and Phoenix. As Waymo prepares for its Miami debut, competition in the self-driving space intensifies, with players like GM’s Cruise and Tesla also vying for dominance in the autonomous vehicle market.
