The European Union’s universal charger law, which mandates USB-C ports for all new smartphones, tablets, and cameras, is now in effect as of December 28, 2024. This regulation aims to simplify charging, reduce costs for consumers, and curb electronic waste across the 27-member bloc. Laptops will also be required to comply with the rule by 2026.
The EU expects the law to save consumers over €200 million annually while eliminating thousands of tonnes of obsolete chargers. While most manufacturers had already adopted USB-C, the law required companies like Apple to transition from proprietary Lightning ports.
The EU praised the measure as a major step toward more efficient technology, reduced waste, and a more user-friendly charging experience.
