In a recent operation, the Israeli Defense Forces successfully located and demolished three significant attack tunnels belonging to Hamas in the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza. The IDF revealed that one of these tunnels had been under Israeli surveillance for several years, including during the recent conflict.
According to IDF reports, one of the tunnels was initially discovered a decade ago and targeted during the 2021 Gaza war, resulting in the elimination of several Hamas operatives. Despite being struck multiple times during the conflict, it was only recently obliterated by the IDF.
The second tunnel, which had breached Israeli territory in 2014, remained inactive after its destruction. However, a deeper section within Gaza was recently destroyed by Israeli forces.
The third tunnel, unearthed in 2019 before the construction of the underground Gaza border barrier, extended several meters into Israeli territory. The IDF maintained constant surveillance over this tunnel and had placed sensors and explosives within it as part of a special operation against Hamas’s underground network. Although targeted multiple times during the recent conflict, it was ultimately demolished in the past few weeks.
Despite the intensity of the recent conflict on October 7th, the IDF confirmed that none of these tunnels were utilized by Hamas, indicating the effectiveness of their surveillance and control measures.
