Last night, a shocking attempt at smuggling eight Palestinians without permits from the West Bank into Israel was intercepted at the Ofer checkpoint. The culprit? A private ambulance driver. The audacious move was swiftly thwarted when authorities halted the ambulance at the checkpoint, leading to the driver and passengers’ immediate arrest. As a consequence, the ambulance itself was seized and transported to a Border Police base.
Health Minister Uriel Buso was quick to condemn the incident, stressing that ambulances are sacrosanct vehicles reserved solely for the transportation of the sick and injured. “Any misuse of such vital resources poses a grave risk to public health,” he admonished.
In response to the brazen violation, Minister Buso called for the revocation of the ambulance driver’s license and the dissolution of the ambulance company involved. Furthermore, he urged law enforcement agencies to pursue legal action to prevent any recurrence of such illicit activities.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, two emergency medical services volunteers were apprehended in Israel for their involvement in the smuggling attempt. The driver initially tried to justify the presence of the Palestinians by fabricating a “life-saving” call to a serious car accident. He even resorted to activating the vehicle’s sirens in a futile attempt to deceive the authorities.
However, upon inspection, soldiers discovered the illicit passengers hidden in the back of the ambulance, attempting to infiltrate Israeli territory unlawfully. As a result of his actions, the driver has been promptly removed from all emergency medical services he previously volunteered for.
