Federal agents conducted a raid early Thursday morning at the residence of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, located on Maiden Lane. The FBI confirmed the operation but provided no further details about the nature of the investigation.
FBI spokesperson Cameron Polan stated, “The FBI is conducting court authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane.” Despite multiple attempts, Mayor Thao and her spokesperson Francis Zamora did not respond to requests for comments, referring all inquiries to the FBI.
During the operation, FBI agents were seen carrying paper boxes, clipboards, and large black plastic tubs out of the home. The agents, dressed in surgical gloves, declined to answer questions from the media, including inquiries about the purpose of the raid and the findings. The agents departed in several SUVs, and Mayor Thao was not present at the scene.
Simultaneously, another residence in the Oakland hills at 4320 View Crest Court was also searched by the FBI. This home is owned by Andy Duong, a member of the family behind Cal Waste Solutions. The company has previously faced scrutiny over campaign contributions to Thao and other city officials. Agents were observed searching vehicles and luggage at the property.
Neighbors reported hearing loud noises early in the morning and described seeing FBI agents in what appeared to be armored vehicles. One neighbor, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed shock at the scene, describing Duong as a “nice guy.”
The investigation appears to be ongoing, with no official statements regarding the results of the searches or potential charges.
