An El Al flight en route from Poland to Israel was unexpectedly diverted to Turkey due to a medical emergency onboard. The incident, which occurred as the aircraft departed Warsaw, necessitated an immediate landing in Antalya for urgent medical care for a passenger.
Turkish authorities, however, reportedly obstructed the flight’s continuation by refusing to permit refueling, effectively stranding the plane on the tarmac. Despite the crew’s decision to proceed without refueling, details surrounding the aftermath remain unclear.
Passengers, informed of a potentially lengthy delay, were confined to the aircraft without authorization to disembark. El Al issued a statement regarding flight LY5102, underscoring the decision to land promptly for medical assistance.
The geopolitical context adds complexity, with all direct flights between Israel and Turkey suspended amid strained relations, exacerbated by recent diplomatic tensions. President Erdogan’s administration has maintained a contentious stance towards Israel, including halting bilateral trade activities.
The plane is now flying to Rhodes, Greece to refuel before it can fly to Israel.
