Brazil’s Supreme Court has added a new $1.8 million fine to the penalties against social media platform ‘X’, increasing the total amount to over $5 million. This comes as the platform, owned by Elon Musk, works to resolve a ban imposed by Brazil after several accounts were accused of promoting hate speech and misinformation.
The initial fines of $3.4 million stemmed from earlier violations, while the new charge was triggered when some users regained access to the app briefly last week, an act the platform claims was accidental.
To comply with the court’s orders, ‘X’ has banned nine accounts under investigation. Musk, known for his strong stance on free speech, resisted the orders for months, even mocking Brazil’s Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who froze one of Musk’s Starlink accounts in retaliation.
The ban may soon be lifted as ‘X’ now appears to be cooperating with the court’s demands.
