Laura Kavanagh, the commissioner of the New York City Fire Department, has announced her resignation. Despite the continued support of Mayor Eric Adams, Kavanagh, 42, has faced significant criticism from within and outside the department.
Kavanagh’s tenure saw her targeted with an age discrimination lawsuit and public jeering during the annual NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade. In her resignation statement, she expressed confidence in the decision and plans to assist with the transition to new leadership over the coming months.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve the FDNY,” Kavanagh stated, reflecting on her decade-long career with the department.
