Hormel Foods Sales, LLC has initiated a voluntary recall of specific batches of Planters® Honey Roasted Peanuts and Planters® Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts. The recall is limited to products manufactured at one of its facilities in April, affecting only two retailers across five states.
The recall comes in response to the potential contamination of the products with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that poses a serious health risk, particularly to vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Listeria infection can lead to severe symptoms, including high fever, headaches, nausea, and abdominal pain, with potential complications such as miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. The affected products were distributed to Publix and Dollar Tree distribution centers in select states.
Consumers are advised to check the “Best if Used By Date” on the bottom of the Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts can and the UPC code on the side of the can to determine if their product is included in the recall. No other sizes, varieties, or packaging configurations of Planters® brand products are affected.
While there have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled products thus far, consumers are urged to either dispose of the product or return it to the store of purchase for a full refund or exchange. Hormel Foods Customer Relations can be contacted for further inquiries or assistance.
Hormel Foods underscores its commitment to food safety and has initiated a comprehensive investigation to identify the source of the contamination. The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration to ensure consumer safety.
