The battle over naming rights continues to escalate in Washington as politicians clash over whether to honor former President Donald Trump with a federal prison or an airport. House Democrats fired back at their Republican counterparts’ proposal to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after Trump by suggesting that a federal prison in Miami be re-dedicated in his name. The proposal, though largely seen as symbolic and unlikely to pass in the Republican-controlled House, highlights the contentious nature of Trump’s legacy.
Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia, who introduced the counter-proposal along with Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida and John Garamendi of California, emphasized the irony of naming a prison after Trump, given his legal troubles. Connolly quipped, “it is only right that the closest federal prison to Mar-a-Lago should bear his name.”
While Trump himself has not publicly commented on the prison proposal, he expressed delight over the plan to rename Dulles Airport after him, calling it “such a great honor” on his Truth Social platform. The proposed renaming of Dulles Airport, championed by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania, was hailed by Republicans as a fitting tribute to Trump’s presidency. However, the plan faces steep hurdles, as it would require approval from the Democratic-controlled Senate and President Joe Biden.
Meanwhile, Trump, who is facing multiple criminal trials, including a federal hush money case and charges of mishandling classified documents, has denounced the indictments as “election interference.” His legal woes have become a focal point of the ongoing naming saga, with Democrats seizing the opportunity to poke fun at the former president’s predicament.
